Employer Insight: Phil Hannah, who is currently the Group Aftersales Strategic Manager. Phil embarked on his apprenticeship journey in 1993 through the John Deere AG Tech program.

Throughout his apprenticeship, he developed a wide array of skills essential for a competent technician. Phil says, ‘He gained hands-on experience in hydraulics, transmissions, electrics, farm machinery operation & repair and honed workshop tool skills.’ One of the most impactful aspects of his apprenticeship was the support he received from his mentor. Their guidance enhanced his learning experience, bridging the gap between classroom theory and practical application.

Fast forward 32 years, and Phil is proud to say he is still with the same company. Phil says, ‘My apprenticeship laid the foundation for my career, teaching me the importance of showing interest, empathy, and the willingness to ask questions.’. Phil says, ‘For anyone considering an apprenticeship in agricultural engineering, my advice is simple: get some work experience before you commit. Trying out different roles can provide valuable insights!’

Apprentice Insight: Shannon Collins, a second year apprentice based at our Rayleigh Outlet. She continues to love her apprenticeship experience; although it can be challenging at times, it provides everything she had hoped for.

Recently, she has been taking on more jobs independently; this hands-on work allows her to methodically work through faults, enhancing her problem-solving skills. The training she receives is top-tier, both at the John Deere Training Centre and in the workshop. The knowledge shared by those around her is invaluable, and they are always willing to answer any questions she has.

One of the aspects Shannon enjoys most about her apprenticeship is the opportunity to visit other outlets and tackle jobs that wouldn’t typically come through her workshop. The potential to specialise in certain machines and receive further training is exciting for her. There are numerous paths available after completing the apprenticeship, from specialisation to advancing through the ranks. Shannon feels her apprenticeship provides her with a solid foundation and a foot in the door.

The small team of technicians and friendly environment at Rayleigh makes it easy to learn and enjoy the work, and Shannon finds the camaraderie they share also enhances the experience. In summary, Shannon Collins’s apprenticeship journey has been incredibly fulfilling so far, and she looks forward to the opportunities that lie ahead.

Apprenticeship Insight: Ben Cannon, a second-year turf apprentice based at our Cromer outlet. Here’s a brief look at his apprenticeship journey so far… Ben says, ‘My apprenticeship has been surprisingly diverse. I work on a range of machinery, including handheld tools, walk-behind mowers, wood chippers, and compact tractors.’

Recently, he has been focused on spinning, relief grinding, and setting up cutting units—a crucial part of maintenance work. Each task helps build his knowledge and skills. He is supplied with practical workwear like Tuckwell polos and steel-toe boots and overalls for messier jobs. Ben says, “I am fortunate to have access to specialised tools my mentor has guided me in choosing.”

Ben has hands-on experience of repairing machinery and constant learning as each day presents new challenges, keeping him motivated. Ben says that going to John Deere in Langar for tuition has also been a privilege, with high-quality training and excellent facilities.

Apprenticeship Celebration: Max Hodges, who has recently completed his apprenticeship training at Tuckwells, based at the Framfield outlet. Max shares his enriching experience that combines hands-on learning with classroom instruction.

To build his tool inventory, Max identified frequently used tools that he wanted to buy to build up his toolkit through his hands-on tasks and took advantage of his employee discount when purchasing from the parts department. Max enjoys the practical aspects of his apprenticeship. “Being able to work on various systems daily helps you understand everything you’ve learnt,” he shares, noting that this experience has boosted his confidence.

GCSEs in Maths and English have been essential in handling quotes and coursework, showcasing the importance of foundational skills. His apprenticeship journey at Tuckwells highlights the value of practical learning in building a successful career. For anyone considering an apprenticeship, his story highlights the benefits of hands-on experience combined with solid training.
